 As Lisa cast the spell, she felt her awareness expand
and she could
 send distances and directions as tangible things.  As
this
mystical sense came info a sort of focus she could
"see" two points
of interest, both moving away from her.  The first was
to the 
south-east, between her and the city gate.  The other
was headed 
toward the middle of the city. Both were about four
blocks away.

 Lisa will move over to where some of the victim's
blood has mixed
 with the earth and specify that Earth. It's possible
two persons both
 innocnet traveled through the alley. If someone
stepped in the man's 
 blood however the likelihood is it's either the
killer or a witness.

Lisa's spell is successful, but reveals nothing more. 
None of the dirt
from this alley is mixed with blood.

In addition to casting the spell, she asks the other
guardsmen if 
 they can signal the city gate and close it.  If the
killer is fleeing
 the city, this might buy them some time.

Mahli hesitated only a moment as he considered Lisa's
request before he
sent one of the guardsmen running to find a place to
signal the 
gatekeepers.

Then Mahli said, "I'll trust your instincts, Lisa. 
But we'd better get
to the gate and identify our suspect before people get
antsy and they
start letting people through again."

"Right.  The only problem is I have two directional
'pulls'.  Two people or maybe a person and an animal,
two animals, two somethings have dirt from this alley
and they're in opposite directions.  If the killer is
the one staying in town... we might have a hope of
catching him later. "  she says.

 (A slim hope unless we find another lead.) she
thinks.  (If I guessed wrong, I screwed this case up
big.)

"But the one heading away is the one we won't catch if
he gets out of the city.  Let's go."
